In a show filled with shock and awe, bisexual contestant Danyl Johnson found himself in the bottom two during the X Factor semi-finals this weekend, after singing a killer rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good,” despite praise from the judges. He appeared to redeem himself on Sunday by repeating his stunning debut performance of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from my Friends.”
.
Even though Danyl received accolades from the judges for “Feeling Good,” the voters still placed him in the bottom two of the Final Ten. Louis Walsh raved with, “You owned the stage! It was the most authentic performance of the night!” Dannii Minogue said, “I have a lot of respect for you to have made it your own. It was VERY good.” Cheryl Cole noted, “You looked the part; you PERFORMED the part.” And Simon Cowell stated, “In my opinion , that was in a COMPLETELY different league from whatever we have heard so far!”

Before the show, Danny gave an interview to the X Factor Website. Here’s what he said about last week:
“Singing ‘I didn’t Know My Own Strength’ was extremely scary, because I really didn’t know how the public would react to it. It’s a brand new song from Whitney Houston’s forthcoming album, so the fact nobody had ever heard it before was pretty daunting, I thought people might be at home going: ‘What’s this? I don’t recognize it, I’m not going to vote’, so I’m incredibly pleased we seemed to pull it off . . . and incredibly grateful that people picked up the phone and voted.”

Danyl admitted it was with some trepidation that he agreed to sing the song, but confirmed the risk was worth taking once he sang it through a few times and compared it to the other tracks he’d been offered.

“I have complete trust in Simon, so when he suggested the Whitney number I was like, ‘Really? Are you sure?’ but the man knows his stuff . . . so once I’d got my head around no one actually knowing the song, I just thought I better go for it and make sure I do a good job!

The 27 year-old singing phenomenon also talked about “Big Band Week,” the theme for this weekend’s show. “In a competition like this, there is no such thing as the ‘comfort zone.’ All of us are pushing the boundaries each week because we are desperate to stay in for the next Saturday night. Big Band night is going to be awesome! I’ll be trying out something a little different this week, and I really hope the people at home go for it. I’ll be singing a well known track this time, but I’ll be changing it up slightly and adding my own twist, plus I’ll be mixing it up onstage with a lot of dancers . . . It’s going to be a lot of fun!”

According to the blogs I read over the weekend, my shock at finding Danyl in the bottom two was shared by almost everyone, including the X Factor judges. Miss Frank, a popular girls’ group in the competition, also discovered themselves in the bottom two after 24 hours of public voting. So, then it was up to the judges to decide who would stay and who would go home.

Louis Walsh said, “I can’t believe that these are in the bottom two. The act that I HAVE to send home is . . . Danyl.” Simon Cowell, Danyl’s sponsor, was beside himself. “I think it’s a joke that you are in this position right now. The act that ought to go home is . . . Miss Frank.” Dannii Minogue was matter-of-fact: “Based upon the final performance, the act to go home is . . . Miss Frank.” And Cheryl Cole said, “The act that I send home is . . . Danyl.”
