Lady Gaga sang "Speechless" Monday night (12-7-09) for the Royal Variety Performance show in London at Blackpool’s Opera House. She sat in front of a black piano suspended in mid-air that had giant stilts for legs, while wearing a red Elizabethan-inspired PVC-rubber dress with a 20-foot long train and an over-sized neck ruffle.
.
Lady Gaga reportedly ditched her suicide act in reverence to the British Queen. Over a thousand people gathered outside the theatre for a glimpse of the Royal ones, as well as the various stars, as they arrived for the gala evening, held for charity.
.
Dance troupe Diversity, who won the right to perform as winners of the Britain’s Got Talent TV show, wowed the crowd with an energetic routine.
Besides Lady Gaga, performers included Hollywood legend Bette Midler, "teen idol" Miley Cyrus, crooner Michael Buble, Soul legend Chaka Khan, "pop magpie" Mika, and classical British singer Katherine Jenkins along with talent show winners Alexandra Burke (2008 X-Factor) and Diversity (Britain’s Got Talent).
.
The Royal Variety Performance is held annually in support of the Queen’s Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund which benefits entertainers in the UK who require assistance as a result of old age, health issues, or hard times.
.
The Queen, Prince Philip, and the Duke of Edinburgh attended the performance, which was hosted by popular comedian Peter Kay.
.
Though officially over for the year, the town’s famous lights were turned on again on Monday night along the route of the royal party.

After Gaga sang, she was introduced to the Queen, and both women appeared delighted. The usually reserved monarch giggled when Gaga bowed and shook her hand.

The Queen and Lady Gaga also shared an extended conversation, unusual for British Royalty. Check out the videos at the bottom of this post.

The long red dress and 20-foot long cloak Gaga donned for her audience with Her Majesty looked almost Elizabethan, save for the fact that it was made from synthetic PVC rubber. Gaga also wore matching rubber around her eyes.

Among other things, Lady Gaga confirmed her bisexuality, bluntly telling Walters when asked, “I have had sexual relations with women.” See our video for the full interview.

Gaga will be on the cover of the January 2010 issue of Elle Magazine. In the article, they call Lady Gaga “a fame phenomenon. By bringing dance music to the mainstream pop scene, Gaga has changed the landscape of music on American radio. She made pop music exciting again. Exciting and dangerous.”
Lady Gaga in a brown/copper corset on the cover of the January issue of Elle Magazine, looking sexy as hell.
“She plays by her own rules,” Elle continued. “Lady Gaga, born in 1986, began collaborating with a creative team called the Haus of Gaga, a group of stylists, fashion designers, producers, and her choreographer, Laurieann Gibson, to remix art, fashion, modern dance, and musical references into her scandalous live shows and videos. Her first album The Fame produced more number one Billboard Pop Chart single hits than any first CD in history.”
Here's a photo of an "alternate" Lady Gaga Elle cover, which will be sent to those with subscriptions. Organza trousers $530. Hat by Hussein Chalayan. Pants at Mameg Beverly Hills.
FYI: “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga’s latest single, has been rated number one for six weeks now, the second longest running chart topper of the year! The video has had over five million hits on YouTube!

On using her sexuality: “My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough…The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.”
.
On her romantic future: “In eight to 10 years, I want to have babies for my Dad to hold, grandkids. And I want to have a husband who loves and supports me, just the way anyone else does. I would never leave my career for a man right now, and I would never follow a man around.”
Second page of the Lady Gaga Elle interview. They continue: "Lady Gaga always wanted to be an entertainer. The environment her Catholic father and Methodist mother created was, she says, 'traditional yet psychologically progressive.'" Click photo to enlarge!

Unfortunately, the launch was fraught with problems. The videos are slow to play because the site doesn’t have enough bandwidth to support the number of people who’ve tried to visit. Also, persons outside the United States are unable to access the videos, which makes no sense to me!

In any case, Lady Gaga performed “Speechless” at the gig and we are fortunate enough to have the video, even though VEVO hasn’t released any clips from the evening, which I find strange, considering it’s supposed to be all about videos. Go figure. Anyway, watch Lady Gaga singing in the video at the base of this page. She donned her famous “hair bow” for the occasion.
